Nicole Rubinova, female swedish composer, commissioned by Dialogue of Minds

Meet our first commissioned composer

We are delighted to be working with Nicole Rubinova for our first commissioned work. The piece will be given its world premiere at Burgh House in London on the 15th of June. The piece will then follow our programme all through our 2025 London tour. We will also bring the piece to Vanuatu and the Suzanne Bastien Art Gallery in July.

Nicole’s music exists at the intersection of experimental art music and tonality, often rooted in a narrative. With a background as an opera singer, her musical language carries a natural lyricism—melodic, expressive, and shaped by the sensitivity of the voice. When she composes, she seeks to convey emotion, to let the music speak where words fall short. Her works are often described as evocative, imbued with a sense of nostalgia and melancholy—like echoes of something lost, yet still close.

The new piece Presence is an exploration of time and being. How present are we in our own time? Does the pace of time shift depending on how deeply we immerse ourselves in the now? The music is a reflection on the essence of the moment—a meditative, minimalist journey where each tone is allowed to resonate fully, leaving traces in the stillness. Through resonance and repetition, the present unfolds gradually, like ripples on water, each new impulse born from the one before. In this sonic world, urgency ceases to exist. Time becomes a living, organic flow rather than a linear progression forward. The music settles into what is—into the unfolding now—inviting the listener to sink into a space where the boundaries between past, present, and future dissolve.
